Clients will be involved in therapy sessions throughout our program.  Therapy sessions are the main focus of the program and essential for the recovery process.  The types of therapy that are provided are group, individual, family, trauma, psychoeducation and experiential therapy.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is an essential component to the recovery process.  Benefits of Group Therapy include; interacting with others, sharing information and experiences with one another, learning how to avoid engaging in relapse behaviors and learning new new healthy behaviors. Group Therapy enforces accountability, provides peer support, promotes a sense of belonging and provides clients with insight and power.  These aspects of group therapy reduce stress, guilt and pain and help to boost confidence and self-esteem.

Individual One-on-One Therapy

Individual therapy provides clients with one on one time with a therapist to facilitate change and improve the quality of life.  There are goals that are discussed in these sessions and treatment plans tailored to each client based on their individual needs.  Individualized assignments based on the treatment planning will be assigned by the therapist.  At times a client may not feel comfortable to discuss deep rooted traumas or other issues with the group.  Individual therapy is a good avenue to utilize to discuss these issues and gain the confidence to discuss with the peer group once comfortable.

Trauma Therapy

Trauma is an incident that causes physical, emotional, spiritual or psychological harm to an individual.  The individual who is experiencing the traumatic event may feel threatened, anxious or frightened as a result of the incident and they may not be able to deal with or cope with the incident on their own.  Many individuals who experience a traumatic event need support in a therapeutic environment in order to recover.  Trauma and addiction have been linked, and traumas can actually spark and/or fuel addiction.  Each person experiences a traumatic event in their own way, some can experience issues related to trauma for extended periods of time.  If unresolved, trauma often times leads to relapse.

Some examples of a trauma are:

  • Abuse-Physical, Sexual or Emotional
  • Neglect
  • Abandonment
  • Greif-death of a loved one
  • An accident where one’s life was threatened
  • Natural Disaster
  • Witnessing a violent act
  • Combat
  • Divorce

Some common responses to a trauma include:

  • Depression
  • Denial
  • Anger
  • Irritability
  • Mood Swings
  • Anxiety
  • Difficulty Concentrating
  • Issues Regarding to Sleep
  • Issues Regarding to Eating
  • Flashbacks of the event
  • Withdrawal and isolation
  • Physical symptoms such as headaches and nausea
  • Fear that the traumatic event will reoccur

At Changing Tides we want to address your traumatic event in a compassionate and caring way.  We hope to be a part of the healing process for you in order for you to restore your life free from the trauma/traumatic event.

Family Therapy

Family Therapy is also an important component of the treatment experience.  At Changing Tides we recognize addiction as a family disease and that all parts of the family unit need healing.  We provide the family with information on addiction in order to inform and educate them on the disease and the recovery process.  It is essential that family participate in the treatment process as they are a huge support network for their loved ones and need to be prepared to be a part of the solution to the problem.  Family is welcome to attend workshops as well as family therapy sessions with their loved one throughout their treatment.  Lodging is available to family members who participate in therapy.

Psychoeducational Therapy

Psychoeducation is the process of providing education and information regarding the disease of addiction and recovery to those who suffer from the disease and their family.  This therapy is beneficial because it provides clients with the understanding of their disease, symptoms and treatments along with how to manage the disease.  The goal is to help the individual and the family to better understand the disease.  It is understood that those who have an understanding of the challenges that they face, as well as having coping skills, resources and awareness of their own areas of strength are better able to address the addiction.  Psychoeducational groups may be conducted as a lecture, through an online format or through the use of electronics such as DVD’s or CD’s.

Experiential Therapy

Experiential Therapy is different than your standard “talk therapy,” and provides clients with a type of therapy that involves actions, movements and activities.  This is beneficial because we understand that one size does not fit all in a therapeutic environment.  We are prepared to offer our clients the benefits of many different types of therapies in order to facilitate the CHANGE that is necessary to take place for them to recover. Some examples of Experiential Therapy are recreational, expressive arts, music, wilderness, adventure and psychodrama therapies.   During these activities, client’s current or past issues begin to emerge and the facilitator is able to tap into and work with the client on overcoming these issues in a different atmosphere.
